Spain’s left leaning government has barred the United States from using its airspace and military bases for operations related to the ongoing conflict with Iran, in a move that has heightened tensions between the two NATO allies.
Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed that Spanish airspace would not be available for any military missions connected to the war. She emphasized that US forces are also not authorised to use bases located in Spain, reinforcing the country’s firm stance against involvement in the conflict.
The decision, backed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has reportedly complicated US military logistics, forcing aircraft to reroute on their way to the Middle East. Emergency landings or transit would only be permitted under exceptional circumstances.
Spain has emerged as one of the most vocal Western critics of the war, which began following joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year. Sanchez has consistently opposed the escalation, positioning Spain apart from several of its Western allies.
The move has drawn criticism from Donald Trump, who has reportedly threatened to reconsider trade relations with Spain amid the growing policy divide. The disagreement adds to existing tensions between the two nations, particularly over defence spending commitments within the NATO alliance.
Spain had previously resisted US calls to increase military spending to five percent of its gross domestic product, further straining relations with Washington.
Analysts say Spain’s decision reflects a broader debate within Europe over involvement in Middle East conflicts, as governments weigh strategic alliances against domestic political pressures and public opinion.
As the situation evolves, Spain’s stance could influence other European nations reconsidering their role in the escalating crisis.
