Former Edo State governor John Odigie-Oyegun says leaders of the African Democratic Congress in the South South have endorsed the presidential ambition of Rotimi Amaechi ahead of other aspirants, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.

Odigie Oyegun made this known on Friday during the ADC South South leaders consultative meeting in Benin City. According to him, Amaechi formally informed regional leaders of his intention to contest the presidency and received unanimous backing from stakeholders across the zone.

He commended Amaechi for briefing leaders in the region before setting up campaign structures, describing the move as a mark of respect and political maturity. Odigie Oyegun said the meeting resolved to give Amaechi full support in pursuit of his presidential ambition, adding that leaders in the zone would continue to meet regularly to strengthen unity and share experiences.

Amaechi had earlier declared his readiness to serve a single term if he secures the ADC presidential ticket and wins the 2027 general election. He has consistently argued that the party should field a southern candidate in line with the principle of power rotation, maintaining that the South should complete an eight year tenure before power shifts back to the North.

The former Minister of Transportation previously contested the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress in 2022 but lost to President Bola Tinubu, finishing second in the primary election.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who ran in the 2023 presidential election on separate platforms, have also signaled interest in the ADC ticket for 2027.
