President Bola Tinubu has officially nominated former Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Dakingari, for appointment as a career ambassador, following a previous nomination that was withdrawn amid controversy.

The fresh nomination was communicated to the Senate in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary. In the letter, President Tinubu cited the provisions of Section 171, subsections (1), (2)(c), and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the appointment.

The President urged the Senate to give the nomination prompt consideration, describing Dakingari as a career ambassador and expressing confidence in the Senate’s expeditious review. The letter read, “Distinguished Senate President, request for the confirmation of a career ambassador. I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Usman Dakingari as career ambassador. Whilst I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening. The committee has been directed to submit its report within one week, after which the Senate will deliberate and vote on the confirmation.

Dakingari’s nomination comes at a time when Nigeria continues to strengthen its diplomatic corps, emphasizing the importance of experienced and career diplomats in advancing the country’s foreign policy and international relations objectives.

The outcome of the Senate review will determine whether the former governor will assume a key diplomatic role, representing Nigeria abroad in line with constitutional provisions and national interest.
