A procession of Nigeria’s political elite descended on the residence of Rotimi Amaechi over the weekend, offering condolences following the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah. The visits underscore the former Rivers State governor’s enduring influence across party lines, even as the nation’s political landscape continues to shift ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Leading the delegation was David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, accompanied by National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and party chieftain John Aregbesola. The ADC leadership spent time with Amaechi at his residence on Saturday, sharing memories of the deceased matriarch and offering words of comfort during this period of mourning. Amaechi currently serves as the party’s presidential running mate, a position that has placed him at the center of opposition politics in recent months.

Dr Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, also made a personal visit to extend his compassion and prayers to the bereaved family. Malami’s presence highlighted the personal relationships that often transcend political affiliations in Nigerian public life, reflecting a culture where traditional values of communal support remain deeply embedded despite partisan divisions.

Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani, the ADC’s governorship candidate in Adamawa State, traveled with her husband, Professor Ahmed Modibbo, to pay their respects to the former minister. Binani’s visit signals the importance of maintaining strong intraparty relationships as the ADC positions itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party ahead of future elections.

Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah’s passing has brought together figures from different political camps, demonstrating how family occasions continue to serve as neutral ground in Nigeria’s often fractious political environment. Amaechi, who served as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari before joining the opposition, has maintained relationships across the political spectrum throughout his decades long career in public service.

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, moments like these offer rare glimpses of unity among Nigeria’s political class. Funeral arrangements for Dame Oduah are expected to be announced in the coming days, with further visits from political associates and well wishers anticipated as the family prepares to lay the matriarch to rest.
