The Plateau State Government has intensified efforts to combat illegal mining, recovering equipment and issuing stern warnings to offenders during a recent joint operation.

Peter Gwom, Commissioner for Environment Climate Ce and Mineral Development, expressed deep concern over the extensive land degradation caused by unauthorized mining. Represented by Samuel Jaryum, Director of Exploration and Gemological Services, Gwom emphasized that illegal mining continues to pose significant environmental and social challenges despite Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and fostering prosperity.

“The ministry is particularly worried about the increasing number of deaths linked to illegal mining operations and the rising population of out-of-school children in mining-prone areas within the state capital,” Jaryum stated.

The joint task force, working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, visited multiple sites including Zawan, Rayfield Resort, Lamingo Dam, and Yingi Reserved areas, where illegal mining activities were rampant. During the operation, the team recovered generators, pumping machines, pickaxes, and other mining tools.

Officials condemned mining in residential areas and near Lamingo Dam, citing severe environmental hazards and public safety risks. They urged residents to refrain from engaging in illegal mining practices and to report any suious activities to the authorities.

The ministry also encouraged individuals interested in mining to formalize their operations by registering with the ministry, obtaining the necessary licences, and adhering to global best practices. These measures, they stressed, are crucial for protecting the environment, ensuring community safety, and promoting sustainable economic development across Plateau State.

With continued enforcement and public cooperation, the state government aims to curb illegal mining, restore affected lands, and foster responsible mineral development in the region.
