Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the Nigerian Federal Government to make public the full details of the tax cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Nigeria and France. He warned that secrecy surrounding revenue-related agreements could undermine public trust.
In a statement on Wednesday, Obi acknowledged that international partnerships in tax administration are not inherently problematic but stressed that any agreements involving taxation, data management, and public revenue must be transparent and clearly explained to Nigerians.
Obi expressed concern that such a significant agreement appears to have been concluded without full disclosure of its terms or a clear explanation of its objectives, scope, and expected outcomes.
He emphasized that while foreign expertise can be beneficial, the government must justify these engagements by outlining the specific gaps they aim to fill, why these gaps cannot be addressed locally, and the tangible benefits Nigeria stands to gain.
Highlighting Nigeria’s existing pool of tax professionals, advisory firms, and internationally recognized consultancies, Obi argued that sustainable tax reform should focus on strengthening domestic capacity rather than over-relying on external partnerships.
Obi pointed out that the MoU controversy arises amid deep economic challenges, including over 60% of Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty, high youth unemployment, and small businesses burdened by multiple taxes.
He also noted that rising government borrowing without corresponding productivity improvements makes it crucial for tax policies to prioritize fairness, efficiency, and accountability.
Obi warned that any agreement lacking transparency, measurable benefits, and public confidence risks further eroding trust in government.
He therefore urged the Federal Government to publish the full MoU, explain its rationale, and outline the mutual benefits, especially the tangible gains for Nigeria.
“Leadership demands openness, accountability and an unwavering commitment to the interests of the Nigerian people. Decisions of this nature must always be guided by what best serves the nation,” Obi said.
