ABUJA – The Senate has commended the Federal Government for launching Nigeria’s National Halal Economy Strategy, describing it as a bold and forward-looking initiative aimed at positioning the country to tap into the $7.7 trillion global halal market and accelerate economic diversification.

In a statement, Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, noted that the strategy is timely, given Nigeria’s vast agricultural resources, large domestic market, youthful population, growing manufacturing sector, and expanding services industry. He highlighted that the initiative aligns with the administration’s broader economic reform agenda, including non-oil revenue mobilisation, export diversification, SME development, job creation, and foreign exce earnings.

Senator Musa said the strategy draws on international best practices, citing countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Singapore, which have successfully leveraged halal frameworks to boost trade, investment, and manufacturing growth. He added that the initiative is inclusive, globally oriented, and designed to enhance quality standards, certification, and competitiveness across multiple sectors while respecting Nigeria’s diversity.

Assuring the Federal Government of full legislative support, the Committee pledged to provide oversight, regulatory clarity, and fiscal sustainability to ensure effective implementation. Senator Musa said, “This decisive step reinforces Nigeria’s readiness to adopt proven international models, unlock new economic frontiers, and position itself as a competitive player in the evolving global economy.”
