PDP Urges Governor Umo Eno to Prioritize Housing in Akwa Ibom Over Abuja Estate

UYO — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State to halt plans to build an Akwa Ibom Estate in Abuja and focus on addressing the state’s growing housing deficit.

Governor Eno recently revealed that his administration was exploring land acquisition in the Federal Capital Territory for the proposed estate. He also mentioned plans for Ibom Hotels and Apartments in Abuja and Ibom Towers in Lagos as part of efforts to expand the state’s hospitality and real estate portfolio.

Reacting, PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice (PAPA-J) described the move as “deeply disappointing” amid rising rent costs and housing shortages in Akwa Ibom. Chairman Dr. Tom FredFish criticized the plan as economically misplaced and socially insensitive, stressing that residents face overcrowding, unsafe living conditions, and escalating rents.

FredFish argued that investing in housing within Akwa Ibom would create jobs for youths, boost local construction firms, increase internally generated revenue, and stimulate the state’s economy. He added that an Abuja estate would primarily benefit political elites rather than ordinary citizens.

The group urged Governor Eno to suspend plans for the Abuja project and launch an affordable housing development programme in Akwa Ibom to expand home ownership and alleviate rent burdens, emphasizing that “Akwa Ibom people deserve development at home.”
