The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State has officially withdrawn from the local government elections scheduled for December 13, 2025. This decision was announced by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Amos Adziba, following a meeting of the State Executive Committee in Maiduguri. The PDP cited two main reasons for its withdrawal:
Lack of Trust in the Electoral Body: The party expressed concerns over the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC), asserting that the commission has not demonstrated credibility or fairness in the electoral process. Adziba noted that the commission failed to provide adequate reassurances to opposition parties, fostering a lack of confidence.
High Cost of Nomination Forms: The PDP criticized BOSIEC for the elevated fees required for expression of interest and nomination forms, calling them unreasonable amid the country’s economic challenges.
In response, Tahir Shettima, Chairman of BOSIEC, stated that participation in elections is voluntary and that the commission cannot compel any political party to participate. He defended the nomination fees, which were set at 500,000 Naira for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship forms and 200,000 Naira for councillorship forms, claiming they were elished after consultations with political stakeholders, including the PDP.
The PDP’s withdrawal raises concerns regarding the inclusivity and competitiveness of the upcoming local government elections, as their absence may affect the representation of diverse political perspectives in local governance.
