Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has secured the Allied Peoples Movement’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections, positioning himself as a fresh challenger in what promises to be a contentious race for Nigeria’s highest office. The governor received his Certificate of Return and party flag during a ceremony held Saturday in Ibadan, signaling what party leaders are calling the beginning of a transformative political movement.

APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle presented the certificate and flag to Makinde at the presidential primary election and unveiling ceremony, describing the selection as a response to widespread calls for national renewal. Dantalle explained that Makinde’s candidacy received affirmative voice vote approval based on his elished track record and achievements during his tenure governing Oyo State. The party chairman characterized the event as the birth of what he termed the Reset Nigerian Movement, framing it as a coalition effort designed to steer the country toward a more equitable future.

According to party officials, Makinde’s emergence followed a peaceful presidential primary process and represents a new alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party and APM, supported by Nigerians seeking greater inclusivity and economic prosperity. Dantalle praised the governor as a seasoned political warrior whose seven years in executive leadership demonstrated consistent resolve to improve the lives of ordinary citizens. The chairman portrayed the candidacy as more than a mere political campaign, describing it instead as the launching point of a journey to Aso Rock driven by urgent national necessity.

Party leadership emphasized that Makinde’s presidential bid comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria, positioning his candidacy as a direct response to what they characterize as national decline. Dantalle stated bluntly that Nigeria’s destiny is at stake and must be reset toward equity, dignity, and prosperity. Such rhetoric suggests the APM intends to run an aggressive campaign focused on systemic reform and policy realignment rather than incremental adjustments to the status quo.

Makinde’s political credentials rest largely on his governance record in Oyo State, where supporters point to infrastructure development, education reforms, and economic initiatives as evidence of his executive capability. Critics will likely scrutinize whether achievements at the state level translate to the vastly more complex challenges of national leadership. The governor enters a crowded field that already includes candidates from major parties, making the APM’s ability to build a viable coalition critical to any realistic path to victory.

Looking ahead, the success of Makinde’s presidential ambition will depend heavily on the APM’s capacity to convert enthusiasm at launch into sustained organizational momentum across Nigeria’s diverse political landscape. The alliance with elements of the PDP could provide crucial infrastructure and voter networks, though questions remain about how effectively disparate political interests can be unified under a single banner. As the 2027 election cycle intensifies, Makinde’s candidacy represents yet another variable in what appears set to become one of Nigeria’s most competitive presidential contests in recent memory.
