The chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Bwari Area Council election, Julius Adamu, has withdrawn from the race in support of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Joshua Musa, in a development that has stirred political debate across the Federal Capital Territory.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in Bwari during a gathering attended by supporters and key political figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. In a video circulated online, Adamu publicly declared his decision to step down and urged his supporters to rally behind Musa.

Addressing the crowd, Wike stated that discussions had been held and an agreement reached for Adamu to stand down in favour of the APC candidate. Adamu described the move as the outcome of deep consultations, noting that he and Musa shared a close relationship. He said it would not be appropriate for them to engage in a fierce political battle over the same position and called on his supporters to ensure Musa’s victory at the polls.

The February 21, 2026 Area Council elections will be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission across the six councils in the Federal Capital Territory, namely Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali. A total of 68 positions are up for grabs, including six chairmen and 62 councillors.

The Bwari contest has attracted significant attention, particularly after the Supreme Court of Nigeria affirmed Musa as the valid APC candidate following legal disputes. Wike’s visible role in the negotiations has further fueled discussions about his influence in FCT politics and his evolving relationship with his party.
