Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour, has stated that only residents of Lagos State have the authority to decide who governs them or when a sitting governor should leave office.
Rhodes Vivour made the remarks in a post on X on Tuesday while reacting to a viral report alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu had been asked to resign on health grounds. The Lagos State Government has already dismissed the report as false.
He criticised what he described as attempts to concentrate political power in the hands of a few individuals, arguing that such actions undermine democratic principles and the will of the people.
According to him, it is wrong for decisions about who becomes governor or when a governor should leave office to be influenced by a small group of political actors.
He insisted that only the people of Lagos State have the right to determine their leaders and decide when they are no longer satisfied with their performance in office.
Rhodes Vivour further described Lagos State as too important to be controlled by the preferences of a single individual or a powerful political group, stressing the need for greater accountability in leadership.
He called for a shift towards people driven governance ahead of the 2027 elections, adding that citizens must take greater responsibility in choosing leaders who truly represent their interests.
In his remarks, he urged voters to reject what he described as political manipulation and to focus on electing leaders who are accountable to the public.
His comments came shortly after the Lagos State Government issued a statement debunking claims that Governor Sanwo Olu had been asked to resign due to health concerns.
The government described the report as false and misleading, insisting that the governor remains in good health and is fully carrying out his duties.
Officials also clarified that Governor Sanwo Olu recently held meetings with key stakeholders, including his deputy, who expressed political ambitions ahead of future elections.
The government urged members of the public to disregard the viral claims and avoid spreading misinformation.
