Leaders and elders of the All Progressives Congress All Progressives Congress in Ondo State have adopted a consensus approach for selecting party candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intensify consultations across party structures.
The elders, operating under the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum, made the position known during a press briefing in Akure, where they said the consensus model would help reduce internal disputes, promote unity, and strengthen the party’s chances at the polls.
Speaking at the event, facilitator of the forum, Mr Ademola Ijabiyi, said the APC remains committed to internal democracy but noted that consensus arrangements have historically helped prevent violent or divisive primaries within the party.
He advised the governor to engage widely with stakeholders across wards, local government areas, and state party structures, as well as all aspirants, in order to build trust and ensure inclusiveness in the selection process.
According to him, party elders are neutral arbiters who do not promote individual candidates but intervene when disputes arise to restore peace and unity.
Ijabiyi added that President Bola Tinubu had given governors a stronger role in shaping party consensus processes, stressing that wise leadership requires wide consultation before decisions are made.
The forum also declared strong support for the re election bid of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, describing him as the APC’s preferred consensus candidate based on his performance in office.
The elders said Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated strong leadership through difficult economic decisions, which they claimed were aimed at ilising the country and improving long term growth.
They also highlighted federal government projects in Ondo State, including infrastructure development, agricultural programmes, and housing initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The group pointed to reforms in foreign exce policy and student loan schemes as part of efforts they believe are expanding access to education and improving economic ility.
Ijabiyi further noted that Ondo State currently benefits from increased federal presence, including representation in the Federal Executive Council, and praised ministerial contributions to grassroots mobilisation.
He dismissed concerns that the APC’s growing dominance could lead to a one party state, arguing instead that it reflects political support based on performance rather than democratic erosion.
According to the elders, the adoption of consensus and support for Tinubu’s candidacy is aimed at strengthening party unity and ensuring electoral success in 2027.
