Obasanjo Applauds Makinde’s Leadership, Says Critics Often Become Supporters

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared that many of the people who once criticized him are now among his biggest supporters. He made this remark on Wednesday while attending the commissioning of the new Ibadan Central Bus Terminal at Iwo Road, alongside Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

The newly launched terminal includes two large bus stations, waiting areas, ticket booths, restaurants, restrooms, parking spaces, a power station, water storage, elevators, and escalators—designed to improve transportation in the city.

Obasanjo used the occasion to encourage Governor Makinde to stay focused on his development agenda, despite any negative comments. “Those abusing you today would praise you tomorrow. I was also abused too, and they have come back today to praise me. That is how it is,” he said.

He described Makinde as an “Omoluabi”—a person of good character—and praised his efforts to make Ibadan more livable. Obasanjo highlighted that the new transport terminals at Ojoo, Challenge, and Iwo Road would make commuting easier for residents and benefit the entire South-West region.

“Ibadan is the third most populated city in Nigeria, but in terms of land size, it’s the biggest,” Obasanjo noted. “Getting around the city takes time, so improving transport is key. These terminals are a step in the right direction.”

He also spoke warmly about Makinde’s personal qualities and professionalism. “You invited me just three days ago, and I didn’t hesitate. That’s because I respect you. If you called me a day before, I’d still come. You remind me of myself. People say Makinde is doing great with infrastructure, and I say, why not? He’s an engineer. But now, he’s also showing s in political engineering.”

Obasanjo’s remarks were both a nod to Makinde’s achievements and a reminder that public service often comes with criticism—but that history tends to reward those who stay committed to progress.
