Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is set to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, marking a significant shift from his earlier governorship ambition.
Obasa had initially positioned himself as a contender to succeed Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. As part of that effort, he reportedly revived the Mandate Group, a political structure closely linked to President Bola Tinubu, to strengthen his support base across the state.
However, his governorship bid lost momentum after Tinubu, in consultation with the Governance Advisory Council, endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate for the top job.
Following that decision, Obasa reportedly turned his attention to the Lagos West Senatorial District, with plans to challenge incumbent Senator Idiat Adebule. His interest gained some support within the All Progressives Congress, but faced resistance from party leaders and the women’s wing, who advocated for Adebule’s retention to preserve gender representation in the National Assembly.
Amid the pushback, President Tinubu is said to have advised Obasa to instead pursue a seat in the House of Representatives. He has now been linked to the Agege Federal Constituency, currently represented by Wale Ahmed.
Sources indicate that Obasa has begun quiet grassroots mobilisation in Agege to build support for his new political goal. The move represents a notable realignment, especially as he had previously backed another aspirant for the same seat.
Observers say the development highlights the fluid dynamics within the Lagos APC as the 2027 elections approach, with party decisions and internal negotiations continuing to shape the ambitions of key political figures.
