The emerging political alliance between former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has sparked intense debate over political interests and strategic calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Political observers say the development reflects the growing trend in Nigerian politics where alliances are often driven more by personal and strategic interests than ideology or long standing loyalty. The discussion follows reports that Kwankwaso is now willing to serve as Obi’s running mate under the proposed Nigerian Democratic Congress coalition despite opposing such an arrangement in 2022.
At the time, Kwankwaso argued that he was more experienced and academically qualified than Obi, insisting he should lead any joint presidential ticket. He cited his political background as a former governor, minister, senator and deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as his academic qualifications.
Kwankwaso had also questioned the political strength of the South East region, arguing that it would be difficult for a Southern candidate from the region to secure broad Northern support. However, his recent statements suggest a significant shift in position.
Speaking during a television interview, Kwankwaso expressed confidence in a possible partnership with Obi, describing it as one of the best political combinations capable of moving Nigeria forward. He also referenced historical alliances between Northern and South Eastern leaders during Nigeria’s First and Second Republics as examples of successful political cooperation.
Analysts believe the alliance may be based on long term political calculations. Supporting a Southern candidate in 2027 could strengthen Kwankwaso’s acceptance across the South while positioning him as a strong presidential contender in 2031 when power is expected to rotate back to the North.
The proposed alliance has continued to generate reactions among political stakeholders, with supporters seeing it as a potential force against the ruling party while critics describe it as another example of interest driven politics in Nigeria.
