The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has credited the recent decline in maritime insecurity within the Gulf of Guinea and Nigeria’s territorial waters to the resilience, courage, and dedication of Nigerian Navy personnel.
He made the remarks during a special Juma’at service held to mark the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebration.
According to him, the Nigerian Navy has grown into a strong maritime force and remains a key component of Nigeria’s national security architecture. He emphasized that the country’s maritime environment is crucial to its oil and gas sector, international trade, fisheries, and other economic activities.
Vice Admiral Abbas noted that improved naval operations have contributed significantly to the reduction of criminal activities at sea, describing the progress as evidence of sustained professionalism and commitment by personnel.
He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s security and development agenda under the Renewed Hope initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Naval Chief urged officers, ratings, and civilian staff to use the anniversary as motivation to enhance professionalism, discipline, innovation, and service delivery in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
He stressed that securing the nation’s waters remains essential to protecting national wealth and ensuring economic ility.
Vice Admiral Abbas also praised both serving and retired personnel for their sacrifices and contributions to the growth of the Navy over the past seven decades, noting that their efforts have built a legacy of honour and excellence.
He paid tribute to fallen officers and ratings who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing them as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s unity and security.
The Naval Chief further expressed gratitude to religious leaders, families, and Nigerians for their continued prayers and support for the Armed Forces, especially those deployed in various security operations nationwide.
He called on citizens to continue supporting security personnel engaged in operations against insurgency, terrorism, banditry, and other threats, adding that their success depends on national encouragement and cooperation.
Vice Admiral Abbas concluded by expressing optimism that the Nigerian Navy will continue to grow stronger and contribute meaningfully to national peace, unity, and development.
