The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has deployed additional detectives from the Force Headquarters to support ongoing operations aimed at rescuing kidnapped students and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The students, drawn from both private and public schools, were reportedly kidnapped on Friday, prompting intensified security efforts by the government and law enforcement agencies.
According to security sources, the newly deployed detectives are working closely with a joint security team already operating in the area to ensure the safe release of the victims without harm.
A source familiar with the operation stated that authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to rescue the abducted students and reunite them with their families. The source also urged residents and parents to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is under control.
Meanwhile, panic briefly spread across Ogbomoso and nearby Ajaawa communities on Monday following rumours of an alleged by armed bandits around Are Ago High School in Ogbomoso.
However, the Oyo State Police Command dismissed the reports as false and misleading. In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command explained that the alarm originated from unverified rumours after some unfamiliar individuals were seen near the school premises.
Police investigations later revealed that one of the individuals was an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps attached to the Kwara State Command, accompanied by two civilians. Authorities confirmed that the visitors were in the area for a birthday celebration and not for any criminal activity.
The Command explained that misunderstanding and panic among students and teachers led to the rapid spread of false information across neighbouring communities.
The police further warned residents against spreading fake news and unverified security reports capable of creating fear and public disorder. Authorities stressed that individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation would face investigation and prosecution under the law.
Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbemiga urged residents to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible information with security agencies to support ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security across Oyo State.
