Nigeria Awaits FIFA Ruling in Controversial Super Eagles Eligibility Dispute with DR Congo

Football fans in Nigeria are on edge as FIFA reviews a contentious eligibility case involving the Super Eagles and DR Congo, following their dramatic African playoff final. Nigeria lost the match 4–3 on penalties, handing DR Congo a spot in the intercontinental playoffs for a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally challenged the outcome, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players, some with dual nationality issues. The petition names players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, and Tephy Mavididi, who previously represented other countries at youth level or hold European passports. NFF Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi described the alleged violations as “fraud” and a breach of FIFA rules.

DR Congo’s football body, FECOFA, has rejected the claims, accusing Nigeria of attempting to “win through the back door.” FIFA has yet to issue a verdict. Possible outcomes include the petition being dismissed, leaving the match result intact, or sanctions against DR Congo, with rare cases allowing for overturned results.

Nigerian fans await FIFA’s decision, which could determine whether the Super Eagles still have a path to the World Cup or whether DR Congo will advance without consequences.
