Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has explained why Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi remains highly valued by managers in England, stressing that tactical discipline rather than raw talent is the key reason behind his consistency at club level.
Speaking in an interview, Sodje said Iwobi’s ability to adapt to different systems and follow tactical instructions strictly has made him a trusted option for multiple coaches throughout his career.
He noted that while many players rely heavily on natural ability, Iwobi’s strength lies in understanding structure and executing team plans effectively, which has helped him maintain a long career in the Premier League.
Sodje added that the midfielder’s development over the years in England has shaped him into a more complete and dependable player, both at club level and for the Super Eagles.
He also praised Iwobi’s experience and leadership qualities, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most consistent international players despite facing constant competition for places.
Iwobi recently turned 30 and is currently sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury during Fulham’s goalless draw against Brentford, where he was forced off and replaced by Samuel Chukwueze.
Fulham manager Marco Silva confirmed that the injury is significant enough to rule him out of their upcoming fixtures but expressed optimism that he could return before the end of the season.
The midfielder has made 27 Premier League appearances this campaign, contributing four goals and three assists in over 2,000 minutes of action.
