The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four year term.

The decision was reached during the maiden edition of the party’s National Convention, where delegates adopted a motion presented by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.

According to the resolution adopted at the convention, the party agreed that after the completion of the single four year tenure by a southern candidate, the presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria.

The development is seen as a major political move ahead of the 2027 general elections and is expected to shape internal party alignments in the coming months.

The zoning arrangement has also cleared the way for former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and other southern aspirants to contest for the party’s presidential ticket.

Political observers believe the decision could strengthen the chances of southern politicians within the party while also addressing long standing debates about power rotation and regional balance in Nigerian politics.

Delegates at the convention reportedly described the zoning formula as a strategy to promote unity, fairness, and inclusiveness within the party structure. Supporters of the move argued that it would help maintain political ility and ensure equal representation between the northern and southern regions of the country.

The announcement has already generated reactions among party members and political stakeholders, with many now turning attention to possible aspirants expected to emerge ahead of the party’s primary election.

Peter Obi, who remains one of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures, is widely expected to play a significant role in the party’s future political calculations if he decides to seek the presidential ticket.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually begin, the zoning decision by the Nigeria Democratic Congress is likely to remain a major talking point in the nation’s political landscape.
