The General Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition, Chief Ayo Opadokun, has called for sustained media engagement and civic vigilance to deepen democracy in Nigeria, noting that democratic governance requires continuous commitment from leaders and citizens.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 Democracy Anniversary scheduled to hold on May 20 at the MUSON Centre in Lagos, Opadokun reflected on the role of the media during Nigeria’s pro democracy struggle between 1994 and 1998, describing journalists and media organisations as critical partners in the fight against military rule.
He said the upcoming event would serve as a moment of reflection, remembrance and recommitment to democratic ideals, while also honouring individuals and institutions that contributed to the restoration of civil rule in 1999.
The anniversary will feature the launch of The NADECO Story, a publication documenting the struggles, sacrifices and resistance efforts of pro democracy activists during the military era. It will also include recognition and awards for founding members, journalists, civil society actors and diplomatic missions that supported Nigeria’s democratic transition.
Opadokun stressed that democracy is not self sustaining, warning that it must be protected through accountability, respect for the rule of law and active participation of citizens.
He noted that the initiative is not political but historical and educational, aimed at preserving institutional memory and educating younger Nigerians who did not witness the military era.
According to him, the lessons of the past remain relevant today, particularly in areas such as electoral integrity, governance accountability and protection of civil liberties.
The NADECO leader also urged the media to continue its watchdog role in society, warning that the rise of social media has introduced both opportunities and challenges, including misinformation and unverified reporting.
He further revealed plans for a future Democracy House in Lagos that will preserve historical records of Nigeria’s democratic journey, including a digital library, hall of fame and civic engagement spaces.
Opadokun said the broader goal is to ensure that the sacrifices made during the struggle for democracy are not forgotten and that future generations remain committed to defending democratic values.
