Mourinho targets Enzo Fernandez as Real Madrid plan major midfield overhaul

Jose Mourinho has set his sights on a blockbuster move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as the Portuguese manager continues his aggressive rebuild at Real Madrid. The Argentine World Cup winner, who cost the Blues a staggering £106 million when he arrived at Stamford Bridge in early 2023, has emerged as a top priority for the Special One, though any deal hinges on Los Blancos first offloading current squad members to make financial and roster space.

Fernandez has done little to quash speculation linking him with a departure from west London. The 25 year old has spoken glowingly about Madrid as a city and notably refused to commit his long term future to Chelsea, behaviour that earned him a suspension under former manager Liam Rosenior last season. His flirtation with a move to the Spanish capital appears to have only intensified interest from the Bernabeu, where Mourinho views the technically gifted midfielder as the ideal addition to orchestrate his reinvented Real side.

According to sources close to the situation, Real Madrid have placed any further midfield acquisitions on hold until they can move players out of their already congested engine room. Eduardo Camavinga has been identified as a potential departure despite the French international’s own desire to remain in Spain. Several Premier League clubs have registered interest in the 24 year old, creating a complicated scenario where the club’s financial needs clash with the player’s personal wishes. Real confirmed the exit of Dani Ceballos on Friday, but more sales will likely be required to fund a move for Fernandez.

Aurelien Tchouameni represents another intriguing case in Madrid’s midfield puzzle. Highly rated by Manchester United and other English clubs, the French defensive midfielder occupies a unique role in the squad as the only specialist holding player available to Mourinho. While Real would entertain a significant offer for Tchouameni, his tactical importance may ultimately see him retained even as other midfielders depart. Such decisions will define whether Mourinho can successfully land his primary target before the transfer window closes.

Mourinho’s return to the club where he previously won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and reached three consecutive Champions League semifinals has been marked by ambitious recruitment from the Premier League. Marc Cucurella joined from Chelsea for £51 million as part of a defensive overhaul, while Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva both arrived on free transfers after running down their contracts. Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries will add depth at right back, giving Mourinho a significantly reconfigured squad built around experience and proven quality from Europe’s most competitive league.

Cucurella, now a teammate of Fernandez at international level with Argentina, has publicly backed the potential transfer. Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, the left back expressed hope that his former Chelsea colleague would join him in Madrid, describing Fernandez as both a great player and a close friend. Such endorsements from inside the dressing room often prove influential in convincing targets to make the leap, particularly when combined with the prestige of representing one of football’s most storied institutions. Whether Real can navigate the financial complexities and offload the necessary players remains the defining question as the summer transfer window progresses, but Mourinho’s intentions are unmistakably clear.
