Chelsea Eye Granit Xhaka Move as Xabi Alonso Seeks Reunion with Former Leverkusen Star

Chelsea have set their sights on Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka in what would represent a reunion between the Switzerland international and manager Xabi Alonso, who previously worked together during their trophy laden spell at Bayer Leverkusen. The move signals Alonso’s determination to inject experience and winning mentality into a Chelsea squad that continues to undergo significant reconstruction at Stamford Bridge.

Xhaka, who will turn 34 in September, made the move to the Stadium of Light last summer and quickly became instrumental in Sunderland’s remarkable campaign. His leadership and composure in midfield helped guide the newly promoted side to an unexpected Europa League qualification, cementing his reputation as a transformative presence even in the twilight of his career. The midfielder still has two years remaining on his current contract, a detail that may complicate any potential departure from the northeast.

Alonso’s interest in Xhaka stems from their successful partnership at Leverkusen, where the Spanish manager orchestrated an extraordinary Bundesliga title triumph in 2024 with the Swiss midfielder playing a pivotal role. That relationship remains strong, and Alonso believes Xhaka’s tactical intelligence and experience could provide the backbone his Chelsea midfield currently lacks. However, Sunderland are understood to be resolute in their determination to retain their prized asset, particularly given his importance to their European ambitions.

Financial considerations may ultimately prove decisive in any negotiations. Chelsea are reportedly reluctant to commit substantial funds for a player approaching his mid thirties, even one with Xhaka’s pedigree and recent form. Sunderland’s negotiating position is strengthened by both Xhaka’s contract situation and the club’s desire to build on last season’s success rather than dismantle a winning formula.

Meanwhile, Chelsea face a characteristically hectic summer transfer window with multiple moving parts across the squad. Marc Cucurella has already departed for Real Madrid, while the Spanish giants are reportedly considering a move for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández. On the incoming side, Chelsea have secured agreement to sign Atalanta right back Marco Palestra, and are also monitoring West Ham wingers Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville as potential ing reinforcements.

Defender Trevoh Chalobah, currently part of England’s World Cup squad alongside Xhaka’s Switzerland team who have advanced to the last 32, has attracted interest from Como with Chelsea valuing him at £30 million plus an additional £5 million in performance related add ons. As the transfer window progresses, Chelsea’s ability to balance their pursuit of experienced players like Xhaka with the need to manage their wage structure and squad age profile will prove crucial to determining whether Alonso can assemble the blend of youth and experience necessary to return the club to elite European competition.
