Michael Carrick Enters First Full Season at Manchester United Helm With Optimism Tempered by Squad Concerns

Calm is the word most frequently used to describe Michael Carrick by those who work alongside him at Manchester United, and anyone observing his recent interactions with journalists in Wroclaw would understand why. As the 43 year old former midfielder prepares for his first full season as permanent head coach, confirmed in that role on 22 May, he displays the same composure under pressure that defined his playing career. When one reporter pressed him pointedly and persistently about realistic targets and the club’s spending ambitions, Carrick navigated the tension with remarkable deftness. His responses condensed from expansive paragraphs to terse single sentences, he returned questions with questions, and restated points already made. Then, as the conversation shifted to friendlier territory, he seamlessly returned to his more expansive mode. It was vintage Carrick, receiving the ball in tight spaces, sensing danger, staying composed, and moving clear of trouble.

Preseason has provided Carrick with genuine reasons for optimism, even if the raw results of two wins, two draws and two defeats across six matches appear unremarkable at first glance. Chief among the positives is Andrey Santos, the 22 year old Brazilian midfielder who arrived from Chelsea for 48 million pounds and started all six friendlies. Santos impressed consistently with his ability to rotate possession, maintain positional discipline and communicate effectively across the midfield. Similarly encouraging has been the assured presence of Youri Tielemans, the other major summer acquisition, whose early understanding with captain Bruno Fernandes suggests a potentially productive partnership. Bryan Mbeumo has looked sharp and energetic, resembling the explosive winger from the first half of last season rather than the fatigued version that returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Elsewhere in the squad, young defender Ayden Heaven caught the eye in central defence, while Leny Yoro impressed particularly when deployed at right back. Amad Diallo showed flashes of quality upon his return from World Cup duty, though his integration remains a work in progress. Perhaps most intriguing is Shea Lacey, the 19 year old academy prospect who clearly requires careful management but has demonstrated why expectations around him run so high. Patrick Dorgu, who like Santos and Heaven started every preseason fixture, has quietly solidified his standing within the first team framework. These glimpses of promise offer Carrick building blocks for the campaign ahead, even as several significant concerns demand attention.

The issues are impossible to ignore. Striker Benjamin Sesko did not feature at all during preseason, nor did new goalkeeper Karl Darlow, raising questions about their fitness and readiness. Mason Mount, arguably the standout performer across the first three matches, has not appeared since being withdrawn as a precaution following a blow to his foot against Paris St Germain on 8 August. His absence has been filled by Toby Collyer, a midfielder whose future almost certainly lies away from Old Trafford, with club officials confident that interest in him should prove substantial. Harry Amass served as deputy to Luke Shaw at left back, but the intention is for him to depart as well, most likely on loan rather than permanently.

Among the more elished players, Joshua Zirkzee presents a particular conundrum. Popular within the squad and undeniably talented, the former Bologna forward lacks both consistency and an obvious role in Carrick’s system. Tellingly, Lacey was sometimes preferred in the number 10 position, suggesting Zirkzee’s place in the pecking order remains uncertain. Should concrete interest from Italian clubs materialize with acceptable financial terms, a return to Serie A would appear logical for all parties. Yet even this situation pales in significance compared to the Marcus Rashford question, which continues to hover over the squad without resolution. Sources indicate the expectation remains that Rashford will stay at Old Trafford, but a definitive answer has yet to emerge, leaving Carrick and teammates understandably reluctant to offer firm judgments when asked.

Additional squad gaps have become apparent during the preseason campaign. Competition for the left back position behind Luke Shaw appears thin, particularly given the planned departure of Amass. Similarly, the third midfielder role, the player who would rotate with the presumed starting pairing of Santos and Tielemans, lacks clarity. Collyer filled that space during the warm up fixtures but is not viewed as a long term solution. Mount’s injury has only underscored how crucial depth in that area will prove once the grueling fixture schedule begins in earnest. United’s ability to address these concerns, either through the transfer market or by promoting from within, may well determine whether Carrick’s first full season meets expectations or falls short.

As Manchester United prepare to open their campaign, Carrick faces the challenge of translating preseason promise into competitive results while managing a squad that remains very much in flux. The encouraging performances of new signings Santos and Tielemans provide a foundation, but unresolved situations surrounding Rashford, Zirkzee, Mount’s fitness and squad depth in key positions will test the calm demeanor that has become his calling card. How Carrick handles these pressures, both in the transfer market’s final weeks and tactically once matches begin counting for points, will go a long way toward defining not just this season but his longer term prospects in the Old Trafford dugout. The answers are coming soon.
