Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has revealed that he would rather own a football club than become a manager when he eventually retires from professional football.
The Inter Miami captain made the disclosure during an interview with Luzu TV, an Argentine streaming platform, which aired on Tuesday. Messi explained that although he finds coaching interesting, he does not envision himself taking up a managerial role after ing up his boots.
“I don’t see myself as a coach,” the Argentine superstar said. “I like the idea of being a manager, but I’d prefer to be an owner. I’d like to have my own club, start from the bottom, and make it grow.”
Messi added that owning a club would give him the opportunity to contribute to football development in a more long-term and structural way. According to him, helping young players develop and achieve success would be more fulfilling than sitting on the touchline as a coach.
“To be able to give kids the opportunity to develop and achieve soing important is what appeals to me most,” he said, outlining a vision centered on nurturing talent and building a club from the grassroots.
Beyond football, the 36-year-old also shared insights into his personal life, admitting that he values moments of solitude away from the spotlight and family bustle. Messi, a father of three, said the energy and activity at home can be overwhelming at times.
He explained that after long days and the constant activity of his children, he enjoys spending time alone to recharge and regain balance. The World Cup winner described solitude as soing he genuinely enjoys, especially after the intensity of both football and family life.
Messi continues to play a key role at Inter Miami, where he remains one of the most influential figures in Major League Soccer. While his future beyond playing remains undecided, his comments offer a glimpse into a post-retirement path that could see him shaping football from the boardroom rather than the dugout.
