Mali on Thursday held a tightly secured state tribute for its assassinated Defence Minister Sadio Camara, following a wave of coordinated jihadist raids over the weekend that have further deilised the country’s military-led government.
The ceremony took place at the military engineering battalion grounds in central Bamako, where thousands of mourners gathered, including junta leader Assimi Goïta and senior government officials.
The event was conducted under strict security measures, with armed solrs deployed across the capital, checkpoints mounted at key entry points, and barricades restricting movement, according to AFP journalists at the scene.
Sadio Camara, aged 47, was a central figure in Mali’s ruling junta and is widely regarded as a key architect of the country’s growing military and political alignment with Russia in recent years. He d after a car raid on Saturday at his residence in Kati, a military garrison town near Bamako that houses several top junta officials.
The government declared two days of national mourning in honour of the late minister. The ceremony was attended by family members, Malian officials, and foreign dignitaries, including defence ministers from neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso.
During the event, Assimi Goïta paid tribute to Camara by bowing before his coffin, which was dd in the national flag. Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga described Camara as a loyal figure who helped shape Mali’s defence strategy, praising his commitment to national interests and calling him a “martyr” and “hero.”
A military parade followed the tributes, with Camara’s funeral scheduled for later in the day.
The raid that ed Camara is part of a broader escalation of violence in Mali’s ongoing security crisis. At least 23 people have reportedly d in recent militant operations carried out by jihadist groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State, alongside Tuareg separatist forces.
The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims and the Azawad Liberation Front have claimed responsibility for coordinated raids on strategic military locations, including Kati. The unrest has intensified pressure on Mali’s junta, which is also facing territorial losses in the north, including the strategic city of Kidal.
The worsening situation has raised questions about the government’s ability to contain insurgent threats, despite repeated assurances of control.
Meanwhile, regional dynamics continue to shift as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso deepen military cooperation under the Alliance of Sahel States, distancing themselves from France and strengthening ties with Russia, which has reaffirmed its continued presence in Mali.
The conflict underscores the long running inility in the Sahel region, where militant insurgency, separatist movements, and political transitions continue to fuel insecurity.
