As Leah Sharibu marks her 23rd birthday, Nigerians and supporters across the world are once again reflecting on the painful reality of her continued captivity eight years after her abduction from Government Girls Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State.
Leah was kidnapped by insurgents in February 2018 alongside over 100 schoolgirls. While many of the girls were eventually released, Leah reportedly remained in captivity after refusing to renounce her Christian faith. Since then, her story has become a powerful symbol of courage, faith, and the ongoing insecurity affecting many communities across Nigeria.
A women led advocacy group known as Friends of Leah Sharibu has continued to keep her story alive through prayer campaigns, awareness events, and public engagement. Speaking during an advocacy visit, the group leader, Mrs Grace Osifekun, said their mission is to ensure that Leah is never forgotten by the government, the public, or the international community.
According to her, every birthday Leah spends in captivity is both heartbreaking and a reminder that urgent action is still needed to secure her release. The group revealed that they hold monthly prayer sessions and awareness campaigns dedicated to Leah and victims of insecurity across the country.
Mrs Osifekun also appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu to treat Leah’s case as a national priority. She urged the government to intensify efforts toward bringing Leah home safely and reuniting her with her family.
The advocacy group expressed disappointment over what they described as silence from major religious bos and influential leaders regarding Leah’s prolonged captivity. They stressed that Leah’s story should continue to inspire conversations about religious freedom, security, and the protection of women and children in conflict affected areas.
As Leah turns 23, supporters say hope for her freedom remains alive, while calls for justice and action continue to grow louder across Nigeria and beyond.
