The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has successfully rescued a truck driver who was trapped inside the cabin of a 40-foot containerised truck that overturned along Shagamu Road at Oke Gbegun, near LASPOTECH, Ikorodu. The incident occurred around midnight on Sunday when the fully loaded truck reportedly experienced brake failure.

LASTMA stated that the rescue was particularly challenging due to the angle at which the truck had overturned and the heavy load it was carrying. “When we got the call, the driver was still inside the cabin. It was a tense situation because the truck was fully loaded and the angle of the overturn made rescue challenging,” the agency said on its official social media handle.

The LASTMA Rescue & Recovery Team promptly deployed a Super Metro 002 high-capacity recovery truck to ilize the vehicle and free the driver. Traffic on the main road was heavily affected, forcing officers to divert motorists to alternate routes while emergency access was maintained.

After about an hour of careful operations, the driver was rescued alive, much to the relief of onlookers and stranded commuters. LASTMA noted that the container box still required lifting by a crane, but partial traffic flow was restored after the flatbed truck was cleared from the roadway.

The agency urged motorists to continue following diversions and cooperate with traffic officers while recovery operations were ongoing. “We advise all drivers using Shagamu Road to take alternate routes and exercise caution,” LASTMA added.

The quick response by LASTMA highlights the importance of coordinated traffic management and emergency intervention in Lagos, especially given the city’s high volume of commercial vehicles and containerised trucks.
