The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said it rescued 1,075 injured crash victims across Lagos in 2025 as part of intensified efforts to strengthen road safety and reduce traffic accidents in the state.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq. According to the statement, the rescue operations were carried out through coordinated emergency interventions across major traffic corridors in Lagos.
The agency said its officers deployed rapid response mechanisms, strengthened inter agency collaboration and strategically positioned personnel in high risk areas to ensure prompt assistance to accident victims throughout the 2025 operational year.
Operational data also revealed that the agency impounded a total of 17,166 vehicles for various traffic infractions. This figure includes 5,581 private vehicles and 10,825 commercial vehicles apprehended for offences such as reckless driving, overloading, obstruction, mechanical deficiencies and disregard for traffic regulations. In addition, 760 vehicles were impounded specifically for one way violations.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bakare Oki Olalekan, stated that the statistics reflect a shift towards proactive traffic management driven by technology, intelligence led enforcement and sustained public enlightenment campaigns aimed at improving motorists behaviour.
He noted that LASTMA officials routinely undertake emergency response operations including rescuing crash victims, securing accident scenes, restoring traffic flow and collaborating with medical and rescue agencies to prevent secondary incidents.
The agency attributed many accidents to excessive speed, mechanical failure, fatigue, impaired driving and dangerous manoeuvres such as driving against traffic. It stressed that enforcement alone cannot ensure lasting safety without cooperation from motorists, transport unions, fleet operators and the general public.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to sustained enforcement, advocacy and stakeholder engagement to reduce crashes and improve road safety across Lagos.
