The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations that police officers attached to the Area H Command in Ogudu extorted $2,000, equivalent to about ₦3.33 million, from a couple they allegedly wrongfully arrested in December 2025.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the development, stating that the officers implicated in the matter have been identified and brought to the Command Headquarters for questioning. She disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration (DC “A”) to supervise the investigation.

According to her, the officers have already submitted their statements, while the command is awaiting the complainant to formally present his account to aid the ongoing inquiry.

The case came to public attention after details surfaced on social media. A report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism quoted a friend of the affected couple, identified as Abiodun Alabi, as saying the incident occurred in the early hours of December 18, 2025, as the couple were travelling out of Lagos.

Alabi alleged that police officers stopped the couple, profiled the man, seized his phones, and took both husband and wife to the Ogudu Police Station. He further claimed that the woman, who was reportedly pregnant, was left outside the station while her husband was compelled to write an incriminating statement without legal representation.

The officers were said to have initially demanded $5,000 in USDT before allegedly agreeing to accept $2,000, which was transferred to a wallet address provided by them.

Following a petition, a meeting was later held at the station, where some officers were reportedly identified. It was also alleged that part of the money has since been refunded, with ₦2.2 million reportedly returned so far, as investigations continue.
