Glen Powell has finally weighed in on the viral meme that transformed him into “John Politics,” the internet’s favorite fictional authority figure. The image, shot by photographer Bobby Doherty for a GQ photo in September 2025, shows Powell wearing a suit with an American flag pin, his hair and face unusually glossy and embellished.
What does Powell himself think of it? “I actually don’t know what it is,” he told reporters. “I just know that I’m sweaty and greasy.” Despite his confusion, he’s taking the attention in stride. “I’m probably not the one to understand it, but I’m honored, I think.”
The meme has exploded across social media platforms. TikTok users have racked up hundreds of thousands of likes with captions mocking authority figures, while others create elaborate John Politics cosplay. One viral tweet compared Powell’s appearance to “a fake political candidate in GTA,” capturing the surreal quality that made the image so memeable.
One TikToker claimed that “GQ created John Politics” and “the internet elected him.” Still, Powell insists a real political career isn’t happening. “I just love movies because it brings people together,” he explained, firmly closing the door on any actual campaign aspirations despite his accidental diplomatic persona.
