The Jigawa State government has reassured residents about the safety and importance of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, emphasizing its role in protecting women and improving maternal health outcomes.
Dr Shehu Sambo, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, stated in an interview with NAN that the HPV vaccine is safe, harmless, and widely used worldwide. He explained that the vaccine is part of the state’s routine immunization program targeting girls aged 9 to 14.
Sambo highlighted that cervical cancer remains a major health risk for women, often detected too late, and that vaccination can significantly improve survival rates. “We assure parents and caregivers that this vaccine is very safe and is being used worldwide. Protecting our girls will improve the survival of women in the state,” he said.
To address misconceptions and vaccine hesitancy, the agency is conducting awareness campaigns to encourage participation and improve vaccine uptake across Jigawa.
