Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu has secured victory in the All Progressives Congress senatorial primary election for Abia North ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kalu, who currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, defeated his only challenger Philip Nto by a wide margin during the direct primary election conducted across the district.

According to a statement issued by Kalu’s Media Office on Monday, the exercise was held across the five local government areas and 57 wards in Abia North Senatorial District with massive participation from party members.

Official figures released by the APC Primary Election Committee showed that Kalu polled 65,651 votes while Philip Nto secured 2,103 votes, giving the former Senate Chief Whip a victory margin of 63,548 votes.

The results were announced at the collation centre in Umuahia by Chairman of the Abia North Senatorial National Assembly Primary Election Committee Chinedu Christian Kanu, who described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and credible.

Party officials noted that APC members turned out in large numbers to participate in the process aimed at selecting candidates for the 2027 National Assembly elections.

Kalu thanked party members, stakeholders and electoral officials for ensuring a smooth primary election process. His victory officially clears the way for his re election bid in the February 2027 National Assembly elections.

Since joining the Senate in 2019, Kalu has remained one of the leading political figures from the South East region. His legislative efforts have focused on infrastructure development, education, industrialisation, youth empowerment and economic growth.

The statement highlighted several projects facilitated by Kalu, including the construction of over 160 rural roads, installation of solar powered street lights in more than 150 communities and support for industrial projects such as cashew processing and tricycle assembly plants.
