Ireti Kingibe Laments Low Turnout at FCT Area Council Elections

Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has expressed disappointment over the low voter turnout recorded during the FCT Area Council elections.

Speaking to journalists after casting her ballot in Maitama, Abuja, the lawmaker described the level of participation as discouraging and questioned why residents failed to come out in large numbers to perform their civic duty.

“There is extreme voter apathy. Nobody is turning out to vote. It is a great shame. I am extremely disappointed. I expected them to take this seriously, especially considering that substantial revenue and funds are usually allocated to local government chairmen to carry out their responsibilities,” she said.

Kingibe noted that the election presented a critical opportunity for residents to choose leaders at the grassroots level. According to her, greater participation would help address recurring complaints about harassment and poor service delivery by local government officials.

She stressed that while some voters reportedly experienced intimidation in certain areas, others voted without incident. She urged citizens to move beyond complaints and actively shape outcomes through the ballot.

“People complain about being harassed by local government officials, but they must do more than complain. The will of the people prevails. If the people want the ruling party, they will get the ruling party and if they want a different party, they will get a different party,” she added.

The senator, however, commended officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission for their conduct in her polling area. Although there were earlier reports about delays and non availability of materials in some locations, she maintained that the electoral body should not be held responsible for the low turnout.

The FCT Area Council elections determine leadership across the six area councils in Abuja, making voter participation crucial to grassroots governance.
