The Independent National Electoral Commission has called for mass voter education as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

The call was made on Monday by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga, during a meeting with members of the Directorate of Politics and Governance (DPG) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Region 57 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Effanga emphasized that religious institutions have a vital role in shaping public opinion and mobilising citizens for democratic participation. He noted that collaboration with community and faith-based organisations would enhance voter education and help ensure peaceful and credible elections.

“We are working with a very tight election schedule, and we need stakeholders to help us sensitise the public to election procedures,” Effanga said, urging religious leaders to educate their members on responsible conduct during the polls.

He also revealed that INEC will soon begin revalidation of the voter register to determine the actual number of eligible voters in Nigeria, a step aimed at improving electoral accuracy and transparency.

Prof. Udeme Udofia, Coordinator of DPG RCCG Region 57, said the visit was intended to strengthen collaboration with INEC and promote responsible citizenship. He highlighted the DPG unit’s role in educating church members on governance, civic responsibility, and active voter participation.

The initiative reflects INEC’s commitment to ensuring that voters are well-informed and empowered to participate meaningfully in the 2027 elections, with faith-based groups playing a supportive role in fostering democratic awareness.
