The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the All Progressives Congress winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.

The declaration was made on Sunday by the INEC Presiding Officer, Muhammad Usman, following the collation of results. Abubakar secured a total of 15,535 votes to defeat his closest rival from the Young Progressives Party, who polled 5,357 votes.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party came third with 4,547 votes. Other parties recorded significantly lower figures, with the New Nigeria Peoples Party scoring 53 votes and the African Democratic Congress receiving 37 votes.

Announcing the result, Usman stated that Umar Abdullahi Abubakar, having satisfied all legal requirements, is declared the winner and returned elected.

The election was conducted on Saturday, February 21, 2026, across the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory, namely Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali. Results were finalised and announced less than 24 hours after voting concluded.

The outcome in Abaji adds to the growing list of victories recorded by the APC in the Federal Capital Territory area council elections. The party also secured wins in AMAC, Bwari, and Kwali, while the PDP emerged victorious in Gwagwalada.

The smooth announcement of results reflects the electoral body’s efforts to ensure transparency and timely collation. Political observers note that the results underline the continuing contest for grassroots political control in the nation’s capital territory.
