IGP Orders Dismissal and Prosecution of Officers Over Effurun Slaying

The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the slaying of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision was announced during an emergency press conference in Abuja after a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee. Findings revealed that ASP Usman acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the police leadership, the officers will be dismissed from service and subsequently handed over to judicial authorities to face criminal prosecution for unlawful homicide. The recommendations have also been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification in line with due process.
The incident, which led to the death of 28 year old Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, triggered widespread outrage, particularly on social media. Police reports indicated that Ogidi had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition when the fatal ing occurred.
Disu extended condolences to the victim’s family and stressed that no officer has the right to take a life outside the provisions of the law. He reaffirmed the Force’s zero tolerance stance on extrajudicial slaying and abuse of power.

He further assured the public that the case would be handled with full transparency and accountability, emphasizing the commitment of the Nigeria Police to uphold professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.

The police chief also called on citizens to remain calm and law abiding, noting that justice would be served in a manner that restores public trust in the institution.
