The emergence of Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as a leading governorship contender for the 2027 Lagos State election has been strengthened by growing endorsements from key political stakeholders in the state.

Hamzat, who has begun a series of consultations across Lagos in recent weeks, is seeking the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress APC, the same party under which he currently serves as deputy governor.

His ambition has attracted significant support from influential political figures within Lagos politics, signaling what observers describe as a shift from the old political order in the state.

One of the strongest endorsements so far came from Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu, his principal, who publicly described Hamzat as competent, prepared, and deserving of the opportunity to lead Lagos State.

Sanwo Olu made the remarks after a recent meeting where Hamzat formally informed him of his intention to contest the governorship seat, accompanied by a high level delegation of supporters and political associates.

The governor said the visit demonstrated broad based political backing and confidence in Hamzat ability to sustain governance in the state if elected.

He also praised his deputy for qualities such as humility, loyalty, integrity, and commitment to public service, noting their joint efforts in governing Lagos over the past seven years.

Hamzat has also reportedly received backing from members of the Lagos State Governor Advisory Council as well as key members of the state executive council.

Political consultations are ongoing with several influential stakeholders including senators Musiliu Obanikoro and Solomon Adeola, as part of efforts to build wider support within the party structure.

Analysts say the growing endorsements reflect an internal consolidation within the APC in Lagos State ahead of the 2027 elections, with emphasis on continuity in governance.

Observers also note that if Hamzat secures the party ticket and wins the election, he could become the first deputy governor in Lagos State history to succeed his principal as elected governor.

His supporters argue that his experience in governance and continuity in leadership make him well positioned to build on existing developmental projects in the state.

Some political commentators also highlight that previous deputy governors in Lagos history did not succeed their principals, making Hamzat potential emergence a significant political milestone if achieved.

Public opinion remains divided, with some praising the idea of continuity while others insist that the decision must ultimately reflect the will of Lagos voters.

As consultations continue, attention is now focused on the APC primary process where the party is expected to determine its official governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.
