Haaland’s Two Goals Propel Norway to First World Cup Since 1998; Italy Faces Risk of Another Exit

Erling Haaland’s remarkable performance was pivotal in Norway’s 4-1 triumph over Italy at the San Siro, marking Norway’s first World Cup qualification since 1998. The Manchester City striker, who netted two goals within a minute, boosted his qualifying total to 16, more than double that of any other European player.

Italy initially held the advantage with a goal from Francesco Pio Esposito in the 11th minute. However, Norway responded strongly, with Antonio Nusa equalizing in the 63rd minute. Haaland then took center stage, scoring twice in rapid succession during the 78th and 79th minutes to secure the lead. Jørgen Strand Larsen rounded off the victory with a fourth goal in stoppage time.

This win concluded Norway’s qualifying campaign with an impressive eight victories, finishing six points ahead of Italy. The match also saw Haaland achieve his 55th international goal in just 48 appearances, breaking Jørgen Juve’s long-standing national record.

For Italy, the defeat means they must enter the UEFA playoffs in March to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, continuing a trend of failing to secure direct qualification for three consecutive cycles.

Norway’s qualification is a significant milestone, ending a 28-year absence from the World Cup. Haaland’s exceptional leadership and goal-scoring ability have not only been vital in this achievement but also signal the growth and potential of the Norwegian team on the global stage. This narrative of triumph for Norway contrasts sharply with Italy’s looming challenges as they seek to redeem themselves through the playoffs.
