Scotland’s Thrilling Last-Minute Goals Earn First World Cup Berth Since 1998

In a thrilling match at Hampden Park, Scotland secured their first World Cup qualification since 1998 with a dramatic 4-2 win over Denmark. The encounter was filled with emotions, marked by early goals, controversial decisions, and a breathtaking late surge.

Scott McTominay kicked off the scoring in the third minute with an impressive overhead kick that stunned Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Denmark quickly retaliated, with Rasmus Højlund converting a penalty in the 57th minute after a VAR review confirmed a foul by Scotland’s captain Andy Robertson. The dynamics shifted further when Denmark’s Rasmus Kristensen received a second yellow card in the 61st minute, leaving his team with ten players.

Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Scotland regained the lead in the 78th minute through substitute Lawrence Shankland, who scored from close range after a corner from Lewis Ferguson. However, Denmark fought back, and Patrick Dorgu equalized in the 81st minute taking advantage of a defensive error.

With the game poised for a draw, Scotland’s substitutes shone. In the third minute of stoppage time, Kieran Tierney fired a long-range shot that beat Schmeichel, restoring Scotland’s lead. Just a minute later, Kenny McLean added to the score with an extraordinary goal from the halfway line, sealing the victory.

This win not only ended Scotland’s 28-year World Cup drought but also positioned them at the top of Group C, ensuring their automatic spot in the 2026 tournament. Captain Andy Robertson dedicated the victory to his late friend Diogo Jota, while manager Steve Clarke celebrated a significant milestone in leading Scotland to back-to-back European Championships and now a World Cup. The nation looks forward to their return to the World Cup stage, eager to make an impact in 2026.
