Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday presented staff and instruments of office to 14 high chiefs and Baales in Oyo town, formally confirming their elevation to crown-wearing Obas. The presentation was performed by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal at a colorful coronation ceremony held at Oliveth Heights, Oyo.

Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde said the elevation underscored his administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and promoting peace and development at the grassroots. He congratulated the newly crowned monarchs, describing their ascension as both recognition of leadership and a reaffirmation of the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in governance and community development.

Makinde urged the monarchs to uphold integrity, fairness, and service to their people, stressing that their reigns should promote peace, inclusiveness, and support for government programs aimed at improving citizens’ welfare. He added that collaboration between government and traditional rulers remains vital in addressing security challenges, promoting unity, and accelerating grassroots development.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Otunba Ademola Ojo, described the event as historic and culturally significant, highlighting the Yoruba traditional institution as central to governance, culture, and unity. He noted that the beaded crown symbolizes authority, service, and divine responsibility, calling on the monarchs to lead with integrity, courage, and compassion.
