Former Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has officially declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Yobe State in the 2027 general elections, outlining an ambitious plan to tackle insecurity and rebuild the state’s economy.
In a statement released on Tuesday following a consultative meeting with stakeholders, Alkali said his decision was driven by a desire to restore ility and accelerate development in the state, which has faced years of insurgency related challenges.
He emphasized that his administration would prioritize security through intelligence gathering and community collaboration, noting that peace is essential for economic growth. According to him, farmers must be able to return to their fields, traders should operate without fear, and children deserve access to education in a safe environment.
Alkali highlighted his decades of experience in public service, particularly his tenure as the nation’s top police officer, as a strong foundation for leadership. He said his career has equipped him with the discipline, strategic thinking, and resilience needed to address complex governance issues.
Beyond security, the former police chief pledged to focus on economic recovery, infrastructure development, agriculture, education, and youth empowerment. He also promised targeted social interventions, including free healthcare for children aged zero to five and measures to reduce maternal mortality.
Addressing public health concerns, Alkali vowed to combat diseases affecting children and improve healthcare delivery across the state. He further outlined plans to empower women through microcredit schemes and provide technical training and startup support for young people to boost local industry.
He stressed that governance should be people focused, rooted in action and accountability rather than rhetoric. Alkali also expressed readiness to build on the achievements of the current administration while introducing reforms that would strengthen institutions and improve quality of life.
His declaration signals the early stages of political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with expectations that more aspirants will emerge in the coming months.
