The Nigerian Army has expressed concern over the declining number of youths from Eket joining military service, urging increased participation to ensure fair representation.
This concern was raised by Brigar General Moses Ikobah during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Tommey Akaninyene, in Akwa Ibom State.
Ikobah noted that the low turnout of Eket indigenes in the army has become noticeable, revealing that during military gatherings, it is rare to find personnel from the area. He questioned the trend and emphasized the importance of balanced representation across regions in the armed forces.
According to him, out of about 400 recruits expected from Akwa Ibom State this year, only a handful are from Eket, a situation he described as worrisome. He stressed that a career in the Nigerian Army offers more than participation in warfare, highlighting opportunities for professional growth, discipline, and national service.
The brigar general encouraged young people in Eket to take advantage of the ongoing recruitment exercise, assuring them that the army provides a structured and rewarding career path.
In response, Akaninyene commended the army’s outreach efforts and pledged full support to boost awareness and participation among local youths. He assured that steps would be taken to mobilize eligible candidates to apply for recruitment.
He also appreciated the support of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for creating opportunities that could benefit the people of Eket.
The renewed call for enlistment reflects the army’s broader goal of ensuring national inclusiveness and encouraging youths to contribute to the country’s security and development.
