The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission has cautioned political parties participating in the upcoming local government elections in Ebonyi State to steer clear of violence, thuggery, and any actions capable of undermining the electoral process.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, Chief Collins Agbo, Commissioner in charge of Information, Voter Education, and Publicity, said campaigns for the August 22, 2026 chairmanship and councillorship elections officially commenced on March 25 and will end 24 hours before election day.

Agbo urged political actors to focus on issue based campaigns rather than engaging in disruptive conduct. He emphasized that elections should not be treated as a “do or ” affair, warning that any activity capable of threatening the peaceful conduct of the polls would not be tolerated.

The commission also reassured residents of its commitment to delivering a credible and transparent electoral process. According to Agbo, adequate measures have been put in place to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.

He stressed that the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission remains neutral and will carry out its constitutional responsibilities without bias or external influence. This assurance comes amid growing concerns about electoral integrity in local government elections across the country.

Agbo further revealed that the commission has already published the names of candidates submitted by political parties. He encouraged contestants to engage voters constructively and present their plans clearly to gain public support.

With campaigns now underway, stakeholders are expected to play their roles responsibly to ensure a peaceful electoral environment in Ebonyi State.
