Youth groups from the nine local government areas of Southern Borno senatorial district have raised N38.5 million to support the fifth term ambition of Senator Muhammadu Ali Ndume, citing his record of bold leadership and commitment to democratic accountability.
The fundraising event, held in Maiduguri, drew about 2000 participants, including youth representatives and various associations. Coordinating the effort, Alhaji Babandi Shehu described Ndume as a nationalist whose courage in speaking truth to power has distinguished him in Nigeria’s political landscape.
According to Shehu, the initiative reflects the belief among young people in Southern Borno that the country needs leaders who are willing to challenge executive excesses and uphold democratic principles. He noted that the contributions were meant to secure the expression of interest and nomination forms required for Ndume’s participation in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on the senator’s achievements, his aide Junaid Jibril Maiva highlighted a range of development efforts credited to the lawmaker. These include sponsoring 76 people oriented bills and facilitating key institutions such as the Federal College of Education in Gwoza, the proposed Federal Medical Centre in Kwaya Kusar, and the Federal College of Agriculture in Shani.
He also pointed to Ndume’s role in elishing the Nigerian Army University Biu and the North East Development Commission, as well as providing housing for internally displaced persons in Gwoza and Damboa.
Maiva explained that the strong grassroots support demonstrated through the fundraising effort underscores the desire for continuity in representation. He added that the youths view Ndume as a tested and trusted leader capable of advancing the interests of Southern Borno at the National Assembly.
The total amount raised came from contributions across the district, including local government areas and trade groups such as the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers and timber traders in Maiduguri.
Senator Ndume has represented Southern Borno in the Senate since 2011, and supporters say his track record and outspoken approach to governance make him a strong candidate for another term.
