Benin’s Finance Minister, Romuald Wadagni, has secured a sweeping victory in the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results, positioning the West African nation for policy continuity after years of steady economic growth.
The 49 year old technocrat, widely seen as the preferred successor of outgoing president Patrice Talon, won more than 94 percent of the vote based on early counts released by the Autonomous National Electoral Commission. His closest rival, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat even before final results were announced, acknowledging Wadagni’s decisive lead.
Wadagni’s victory reflects strong backing from the ruling coalition and signals continuity with Talon’s administration, which has overseen significant economic reforms, infrastructure development, and increased investor confidence. Over the past decade, Benin has recorded average growth rates exceeding six percent, alongside improvements in public finances.
Regional observers, including the Economic Community of West African States, described the election as peaceful and well conducted. However, some critics and opposition voices raised concerns about limited political competition, pointing to the absence of major opposition candidates on the ballot.
Despite the resounding win, challenges remain for the incoming leader. Benin continues to face a significant wealth gap, with over 30 percent of its population living in poverty. Additionally, insecurity in the northern regions, linked to extremist groups such as Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, poses a serious threat to national ility.
Wadagni has pledged to build on existing reforms while addressing social and security concerns. His presidency is expected to follow the trajectory set by Talon, focusing on economic growth, modernization, and governance reforms.
With final results expected soon, many citizens remain cautiously optimistic that the new administration will translate economic progress into tangible improvements in living standards.
