The Goodluckans 2027 Diaspora Leadership Council has strongly defended former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan following recent criticism from controversial social media commentator VeryDarkMan.
In a statement signed by the council’s coordinator, Eliana Melekwe, the organisation described the comments against Jonathan as unfair and disrespectful to a leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s democracy remain widely recognised both locally and internationally.
The group explained that it represents Nigerians living abroad, including professionals such as doctors, lawyers, academics, entrepreneurs, and other sed individuals committed to Nigeria’s unity, progress, and democratic ility.
According to the council, former President Jonathan remains one of Nigeria’s most respected democratic leaders because of his peaceful leadership style and dedication to constitutional governance. The group particularly referenced Jonathan’s famous statement during the 2015 presidential election that his political ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian.
The organisation noted that Jonathan’s decision to peacefully concede defeat after the election helped preserve national ility and strengthened democratic culture in Nigeria at a sensitive political period.
The council also praised Jonathan’s conduct after leaving office, stating that he has continued to earn international respect as a statesman and advocate for democracy across Africa. According to the group, many Nigerians still remember his administration for promoting democratic freedoms, national inclusion, and relative economic ility.
The statement further urged social media influencers and public figures to be more responsible when discussing national leaders and political history. The group stressed that public influence should be used carefully, honestly, and respectfully, especially when addressing individuals who have played important roles in the country’s democratic development.
