Passengers aboard a United States bound international flight experienced major disruption after a Delta Air Lines aircraft en route to Nigeria was forced to turn back to its departure point several hours into the journey.
The affected flight DL54 operated by Delta Air Lines departed Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport for Lagos Nigeria but returned to the United States about eight hours after takeoff following what the airline described as an operational issue.
The aircraft was heading to Murtala Muhammed International Airport when the crew made the decision to divert back over the Atlantic Ocean. The flight which normally takes just over 11 hours had already covered a significant distance before the unexpected return.
According to flight tracking data the Airbus A330 200 aircraft operated the route for approximately seven hours and 48 minutes before landing safely back in Atlanta in the early hours of Sunday. The aircraft was later grounded for inspection and technical checks.
Although Delta Air Lines did not initially disclose the exact cause of the diversion it later confirmed that the incident was due to an operational issue. The airline also stated that alternative travel arrangements were made for affected passengers.
One passenger described the experience as distressing noting that many travelers had already begun preparing for arrival in Lagos before the sudden announcement to turn back. Some passengers reportedly reacted with frustration and emotional distress during the return journey.
The incident also disrupted travel plans for passengers on connecting flights in both the United States and Nigeria as airlines worked to rebook affected travelers.
In an official statement the airline apologised for the inconvenience and confirmed that passengers were accommodated on alternative flights departing from the United States the following day. It also added that customers travelling in the opposite direction from Lagos to Atlanta were rebooked on the next available services.
The aircraft involved identified as registration N854NW remained in Atlanta for further technical assessment as investigations into the operational issue continue.
