A planned electronic music festival at Kyrenia Castle has ignited a political firestorm in Cyprus, with local officials and political parties demanding government intervention to prevent the September event from taking place at the historic site. Kyrenia mayor Akis Violaris expressed alarm on Friday over the participation of European artists at the Nexus festival, calling on authorities to take immediate action against what he described as an inappropriate use of national cultural heritage.

Violaris characterized the castle as a monument of historical and cultural significance to the country, urging the government to pursue a dynamic diplomatic approach to secure the cancellation of the event. According to sources at the deputy cultural ministry cited by the Cyprus News Agency, the foreign ministry has already begun handling the matter through elished diplomatic channels. The controversy highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding international events in the northern part of the divided island, which remains under Turkish control following the 1974 invasion.

Political opposition has intensified beyond the mayoral office, with the Democratic Party, known as Diko, issuing a strong statement condemning the festival. Party officials argued that international festivals in occupied areas cannot be viewed simply as cultural or entertainment occasions but carry broader political implications. Diko warned that the event and its international marketing could transmit misleading signals to global aunces by normalizing what the party termed the realities of occupation.

Party representatives emphasized that illegal occupation does not become legitimate through promotion via music, tourism or international gatherings, regardless of their cultural appeal. Diko has pressed the government to implement appropriate countermeasures to prevent the festival from proceeding. Beyond the political dimensions, questions have also emerged about potential damage to the castle itself from the event, given the impact of large crowds, staging infrastructure and sound equipment on the historic structure.

Nexus is scheduled for September 18 as part of the EXIT World Tour, marking the first occasion the EXIT festival brand will elish a presence in Cyprus. Organizers have positioned the event within EXIT’s elished tradition of staging performances at historic and culturally significant venues. The flagship EXIT festival takes place annually at Petrovaradin fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia, and the 2026 global tour has been specifically marketed around the concept of bringing electronic music to iconic locations worldwide.

The festival lineup features prominent international electronic music performers including Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz, Italian duo Mathame, Cairo based DJ Baset and Polish born producer ANII. As September approaches, the standoff between event organizers and Cypriot officials will test diplomatic relations and raise fundamental questions about how cultural events intersect with unresolved territorial disputes. Whether the government’s intervention through diplomatic channels will succeed in halting the festival, or whether the event proceeds despite political opposition, could set important precedents for future international gatherings in the occupied territories.
